The Slow Gin Fizz

…and you’re welcome

weekend review June 7, 2009

this weekend consisted of too much unrelated awetastickness to be reviewed individually because i have a drinking problem. the breakdown:

  • friday night – road trip to the NIN/Janes Addiction show in Camden, NJ followed by the only mcdonalds fries with bbq sauce. ps- the tour was called NINJA. ahhhh!
  • saturday – extremely ill advised brunch with a walk to best buy followed by the only gin n’tonic and the play ‘superhero rehab’
  • sunday – waiting for godot with bryan followed by extreme exhaustion
  1. camden is really far and basically the place where hope goes to die
  2. is there a greater feeling than being on a road trip and looking at the car sterero and realizing that the song playing is called ‘V.A.J’. answer: no
  3. i did mushrooms! well, not really. i ate a stem and nothing happened. yay me!
  4. tito’s vodka is pretty much the most amazing thing ever.  HOWEVER, if you get a ginger ale and pour in the vodka until you taste it, you will be pouring for a really long time and by the time you normally would taste it, you’re already drunk and no longer tasting anything. basically, drunker than you need to be in a car on the way to camden
  5. but you will live
  6. camden sucks because they only sell ‘large beer’ and not ‘beer large’. but at least they have yeungling
  7. NIN is amazing live. yes, i have more to say about vodka than NIN.
  8. jane’s addiction is really really really really incredible live and perry farrell is so the man
  9. i had always thought dave navarro was all hype, but oh how wrong i was. top ten guitarists of ever.
  10. forget everything i said about camden cause they have the most amazing mcdonalds fries ever and they totally forget to charge you
  11. when did i stop sleeping? why did i stop listening to the blood hound gang?
  12. why did i think eggs benedict was a good hangover food?
  13. best buy no longer sells cool random movies in the random movie section
  14. sometimes a gin & tonic is the happiest thing that could happen
  15. i would take a bike for rachel. i didn’t, but i would if i had been a few moments quicker.
  16. waiting for a play is really fun when the wait music includes the song ‘the hardest part of breaking up’ by 2Gether
  17. superhero rehab was hysterical. why is this not a feature film starring ben affleck? i wish i had a cool superhero name like ‘critter’
  18. taking the train with jian is even fun sober
  19. waiting for godot made my head hurt but i think i liked it. good thing bryan is so rad.
  20. there is a drink in new york that consists of margarita, sangria and a corona with a lime in the bottle turned upside down into the cup. and its a plastic cup that you can leave the premises with. and it’s amazing and the best thing that’s ever happened to me. i shall call it the sangria-rona-rita. OR the sargarona. OR the mangritacon. OR the coritarita. OR the gargriona. ok, i’ll stop.

forgive me, this only works in the third person

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_special_episode

  1. lisa’s dad takes her to see ‘bill and ted’s bogus journey’ in the movie theatres. mom makes decision to have more oversight of her family’s movie choices. life is forever changed.
  2. in second grade, lisa is told she is not holding a pencil correctly. no action is taken. years later, lisa is mocked for having remarkably bad handwriting for a girl.
  3. lisa asks a boy to the junior prom. he tells her he will go with her if he doesn’t ask anyone else. neither of them attend the prom.
  4. lisa asks a boy to senior prom. he tells her he is forgoing prom due to financial constraints. lisa goes alone and has to sit at a table with strangers because her friend’s table was mathy and could not withstand an odd number.
  5. lisa gets drunk for the first time senior year at an abandoned building while a lame band rehearses. pattern develops.
  6. rachel goes to england. lisa seeks comfort in the arms of strangers in the woods. turns 21. rachel brings home stuffed Mr. Beefy doll. lisa calls rachel eurotrash until she forgets.
  7. lisa visits brooklyn. many times. documents to be released from vault in the year 2024.
  8. lisa moves to queens. meets greatest sandwich of all time and falls in love. lisa finally understands brunch.
  9. lisa discovers sake. lisa pukes by the rite aid. lisa disowns sake.
  10. lisa meets gin. lisa loses memory and dignity, gains peace and serenity.

  8. an indigenous coffee place opened a block from my apartment
  9. once a year I decide to bar hop in Williamsburg
  10. the unprecedented awesomeness of ‘wolverine’

* a visit from teddy is always a joyous thing, this only refers to the fact that it would kill me

Concert review: bryan adams acoustic at the beacon theatre April 6, 2009

  1. funny anecdote: yesterday I went to my friend mike’s place and told him and his little brother to guess what guilty pleasure of a concert I attended. his little brother’s first guess was hall & oats and I loved him so much in that moment.
  2. dude, this was a really great show. he started exactly on time, he sounded awesome, bantered with the audience and performed for a solid two hours. he didn’t even make us wait more than a few minutes for the encore. (though it should be noted that I wanted 17 tacos and three encores and only got one encore).
  3. he covered one of my favorite songs of all time, ‘when the night comes’ by joe cocker. I was totally affected.
  4. he said he was going to sing a song about the birth of a horse. thankfully the song did not involve placenta.
  5. did you know that the famously romantical song ‘heaven’ was written for a movie about a male stripper?
  6. mythbuster: the summer of 69 is not written about a specific year. it is about a time in one’s life. and a sexual position.
  7. bryan adams is the first artist I’ve ever heard who actually played ‘freebird’ when the audience requested it. though clearly he was mocking us. and I’m ok with that.
  8. he did a great impression of a new yorky jewish mother
  9. apparently he wrote a song for the coast guard. I won’t hold it against him.
  10. we should go to gin tastings before all concerts.

Possible reasons why I am weirdly sick on and off these past few weeks March 23, 2009

  1. I caught a mutated strain of the jians from the jian
  2. I myself am a mutant, as evidenced by my ever changing hair color, and my mutated self is having trouble adapting to earth’s climate
  3. I have at least three bizarre dreams every night so perhaps the end of days is nigh and my body is trying to warn us
  4. the excitement of craig, my new computer, may have been too much for me
  5. tainted barley at the barley party that is my life
  6. I haven’t had a gin & tonic in a while and my efforts to cut down my hard liquor consumption have exposed me to germs that would have otherwise been destroyed
  7. I am being humbled and punished for starting too many sentences with ‘I’
  8. my body has still not adjusted to losing an hour and knowing it is not coming back
  9. just because I decide I can’t wear a winter coat anymore, doesn’t mean the weather will adjust accordingly
  10. my heart has turned to coal

reasons to love gin January 30, 2009

2009 is officially the year of gin and let us all hope it is more successful than 2008, the year of sake, aka the year of yacking on a curb for the first time in my life.

1. gin is flavoured with juniper berries (some varieties of which are toxic!)

2. the most common type of gin is London dry gin and I’ve been told that some of our readers here like british things

3. gin evolved from the dutch spirits jonge and oude and originated in the Netherlands in the 17th century. i love dutch things the way you people love british things.

4. gin was sold in pharmacies and used to treat such medical problems as kidney ailments, lumbago, stomach ailments, gallstones, and gout

5. in england, after the glorious revolution (which after a quick read, seems like it was actually pretty glorious) it was made from grain that isn’t good enough to brew beer with. HA!

6. gin was so popular in england that it caused enough death from alcohol related afflictions to stabilize the skyrocketing population

7. as late as 1913, common gin was flavoured with turpentine

8. in tropical british colonies, gin was used to mask the bitter flavour of quinine, a protection against malaria, which was dissolved in carbonated water to form tonic water. This was the origin of today’s popular gin and tonic.

9. the national gin museum is in hasselt, Belgium

10. sloe gin is a common ready-sweetened form of gin that is traditionally made by infusing sloes (the fruit of the blackthorn) in gin.
